Things to Know and Do
Before you start your self guided Walk or TourEssentials to bring along on the day
If you are using the online version on your mobile phone, it’s a good idea to also bring a battery power pack. While a quality mobile phone camera is good these days, a camera will always capture the best pictures. Bring a pen or pencil if you are using the printed version.
Remember you will be walking so wear comfortable footwear – and don’t forget you are in London – so for most of the year waterproofs, hats and sunscreen may be required!
Remember that London is a busy place. Thieves will target valuable items including phones, cameras and bags. Please be vigilant at all times, especially when you have your phone in your hand, and do not leave valuable items unattended or easily accessible at any time.
What time of day is best?
So having decided if it’s a Historical Walk, a Tavern Tour, or a Speakeasy Tour you should now think about what time of the day will be best.
The Historical Walks can be done anytime but if you are doing a Tavern Tour please remember most London taverns and pubs do not open until around noon and close at 11pm.
Speakeasies tend to open at around 5 or 6pm with closing times often going past midnight if they have a licence. We strongly recommend that you check in advance which days and times these venues open and close. For ease we have included the websites and contact numbers for the Taverns and Speakeasies in the instructions.
What can you expect on the day?
Being a ‘Beyond The Map London Adventurer’ means that you will be exercising both mind and body!
- There are between 30 and 50 multiple choice questions which require you and your friends to discover the answers – by looking closely around you or by Googling the answers. There is an icon to indicate when the answer is around you or when you may need to revert to Google or test your general knowledge.
- Each Walk or Tour takes between 2-4 hours and covers 3-4 miles and certainly over 5,000 steps!
Before you start…
make sure you read the comprehensive joining instructions that will have been sent to you and that you have allocated roles to your group to maximise the enjoyment for all participants (ideally 4-6 people) as follows:
The Map Reader…
besides our own instructions we have provided you with an Ordinance Survey map showing the route.
The Google Operator…
most of the answers are multiple-choice – you will see and discover the answers yourselves but for some it’s a case of testing your general knowledge or even using Google!
The Clue Reader…
a good clear narrator is essential and is also likely to be the party leader.
The Road Safety Officer…
you will be crossing many roads, streets and alleyways with some of you gazing into a mobile phone, reading a map etc … so this role is very important.
The Photographer…
some elements of the Walk or Tour might require a picture to capture those magical memories. We would love it if you can put a Team Photograph on any (or all!) of our social media sites!
The Scribe…
this is the person who writes the answers down (those using a PDF version)
Finally… be prepared for a great day and a fantastic adventure… we do hope you will add a review on TripAdvisor or our Facebook page.
