  • 25 York Watergate

Look for Gordon’s Wine Bar on your right. Walk down the steps into Watergate Walk and walk through the tables and umbrellas of the wine bar.

About halfway along this alley, turn right down another short flight of steps and into Victoria Embankment Gardens with a stone arch on your left.

This stone arch is York Watergate, the original access point to York House (now demolished) from the River Thames. Up until the 1850’s this was the water line of the Thames and barges would stop here for York House. The building of the Embankment to house the sewers taking London’s waste away, is responsible for this change.
